How big a septic tank for a 4-bedroom house?

For four bedrooms the usual minimum is a 1,250 gallon tank: 1,000 gallons for the first three bedrooms plus 250 for the fourth. SepticTankSize starts this page at four bedrooms. The design flow is 600 gallons a day at 150 gallons per bedroom, which in loam soil needs about 1,200 square feet of trench bottom, for example four 100-foot trenches 3 feet wide.

With a garbage disposal many codes ask for 1,875 gallons, so the next common tank size, 2,000 gallons, is used.

How the septic tank size calculator works

SepticTankSize sizes the tank by bedrooms: 1,000 gallons for one to three bedrooms and 250 gallons for each extra bedroom, the most common minimum in US state codes, increased by half and rounded up to the next 250 gallons when there is a garbage disposal. The daily design flow is bedrooms × gallons per bedroom per day, 150 by default; many codes use 120 to 150. The drain field needs enough trench bottom to absorb that flow: area = flow ÷ the soil's long-term loading rate. The pumping estimate assumes the tank needs pumping when sludge and scum fill a third of it, and that each person adds about 30 gallons of solids a year (about 50% more with a disposal). Tank volume is cubic feet of liquid × 7.48 gallons per cubic foot.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a 1,000 gallon septic tank big enough for 4 bedrooms?

Usually not to code: most rules require 1,250 gallons for four bedrooms.

How big a drain field for 4 bedrooms?

About 600 gallons a day ÷ the soil loading rate: 500 sq ft in sand, 1,200 sq ft in loam, 2,400 sq ft in clay loam.

How often to pump a 1,250 gallon tank with 4 people?

About every 3.5 years at 30 gallons of sludge and scum per person per year.
